Kids Coding Classes – what do students work on?
Students in the 7-9 year old coding class will work through the following levels:
Level 1: Foundation
Ideal for students who are new to coding. This group will work through fun problem solving puzzles that teach key coding concepts using a visual language called Blockly. They will get to build simple games, create interactive stories, and learn about sharing information safely online.
Level 2: Create
This level is for students who have completed the Foundation term. The focus is on undertaking mini projects using visual coding languages like Scratch and Blockly. During the year, the projects challenge students to try different coding techniques, solve problems and use their creativity! Students also cover online safety and digital citizenship.
There will also be more advanced options available for students who complete the work quickly and need extension.
Students in the 10-13 year old coding class will work through the following levels:
Level 3: Explore
For ages 10-13 at entry level or with prior experience. At this level we will work through a combination of mini projects and coding challenges in Blockly/Python. Students will be able to try website development basics with HTML/CSS. Students will complete increasingly complex projects during the year and work on improving typing skills.
Level 4: Challenge
For students ages 10-13 who have completed the Explore level. At this level we will work through a series of more challenging projects in Blockly as they prepare to transition to text-based languages like Python. Projects will include building simple games, apps and websites using HTML/CSS. Students will have an opportunity during the year to compete in global coding challenges like NCSS or Grok Code Quest.
Level 5: Python and HTML
For students ages 10-13 who have completed at least one term at the Challenge level and are ready to tackle text-based languages. At this level we focus on an introduction to the text-based coding languages Python and HTML/CSS. Projects will include building simple games, apps and websites. Students will have an opportunity during the year to compete in global coding challenges like NCSS or Grok Code Quest.
